SAMDRUP JONGKHAR: It is the eastern gateway to the country bordering Assam state in India and is a good place for birdwatching, especially Hornbills.
Samdrup Jongkhar Dzong: It is one of the newer Dzongs and was inaugurated in 2008; the usage of bricks and cement is a contrast to the older Dzongs. It acts as the administrative center and houses the monastic body of the district. It is the only Dzong in Bhutan that is built on a flat ground as opposed to the strategic high placed locations or over river confluence of the other Dzongs. A newer Dechhog Lhakhang, housing the main Dechhog statue was later built near the Dzong.
