MONGAR: Before the Dzong was built sometime in the 1950’s, Zhongkhar Dzong, which is now in ruins, was the administrative center in the olden days. The town of Mongar is located on a hill and this places serves as a gateway to Lhuentshe.
Mongar Dzong: It is relatively one of the newer Dzongs in the country. It was built in 1930 during the reign of the 2nd King around an old ‘Utse’ to replace the old Zhongar Dzong. It was built following the traditional architectural pattern. It stands on a gentle slope, which is in contrast to the strategic locations of other Dzongs in Bhutan, which can be attributed to the absence of need to defend during the time it was built.
